The area around Sandstone, MN has been extensively excavated for its abundance of sandstone and granite. The site lies on the banks of the Kettle River on a former quarry. The walls of an abandoned power factory that once served the quarry are the only existing structures on the site.
A massive stone wall creates a grid oriented with the cardinal directions, which organize the private spaces and separates them from the more public spaces oriented with the nearby river. Using the initiation ceremony as a metaphor, which involves a symbolic death and rebirth, members continually descend into the earth as they progress spatially. The journey culminates by ascending a long stair between the organizing walls to the ceremonial spaces housed in the existing quarry ruins.
