The area around Sandstone, MN has been extensively excavated for its abundance of sandstone and granite. The site lies on the banks of the Kettle River on a former quarry. The walls of an abandoned power factory that once served the quarry is the only existing construction on the site.

A massive stone wall creates an orthogonal grid which organizes the private spaces and separates them from the more public spaces which are oriented with the nearby river. Using the initiation ceremony as a metaphor, which involves a symbolic death and rebirth, members continually descend into the earth as they progress spatially. Members begin to ascend a long staircase to the ceremonial spaces which are housed in the existing quarry ruins.
